01The craftsman
Custom cherry library and panelled room built by Domenic Galati

Domenic Galati has spent more than forty years making cabinetry by hand. He learned the trade the long way — squaring stock, cutting joints and sanding other people’s work before he was trusted with his own — and he still runs the shop the same way: one job at a time, from the first site measurement to the last piece of scribe moulding.

In that time he has built kitchens, wall units, home libraries, wine rooms, bars and full panelled rooms for thousands of clients across Canada. Curved oak bars with carved corbels. Arched leaded-glass cabinetry beside a fireplace. Floor-to-ceiling libraries where every shelf edge lines up across a twelve-foot wall. The work is quiet about itself; it holds up to being looked at closely.

He does not subcontract the parts that matter. The person who draws your cabinet is the person who cuts the joints, sprays the finish and hangs the doors — which is why the detail you discuss at the kitchen table is the detail that shows up on the wall.

02How he works

Drawn before it is cut

Every job starts with measurements taken on site and a full-scale layout — reveals, door swings, crown returns, filler widths. Nothing gets cut until the drawing resolves the awkward corner.

Joinery that carries load

Mortise and tenon face frames, dovetailed drawer boxes, dadoed and glued carcass joints. Fasteners hold parts in place while glue cures; the joint is what holds the piece together for decades.

Wood chosen board by board

Grain is matched across door pairs and drawer banks so a run reads as one piece of timber. Solid stock where hands and hinges live, stable panels where movement would open a seam.

Finished like furniture

Sanded through the grits, sealed, de-nibbed and topcoated in the shop under controlled light — not sprayed in a dusty basement. The finish is the part you touch every day.

Installed by the man who built it

Domenic scribes to the wall himself. Old houses are never square, and the difference between a good cabinet and a great installation is the hour spent on the scribe line.

Built to outlast the renovation

Cabinets from Domenic's first decade are still in service. Drawers still glide, doors still sit flush, finishes have aged rather than failed. That is the standard every new job is measured against.
